With the trend towards making smartphone screens as large as possible and limiting the amount of bezel seen on phones, that doesn’t leave much room for some of the necessary components, such as the selfie camera. ZTE figured out how to solve the problem: by placing the front camera under the screen.
Is ZTE the first?
There have been other phone makers who were the first to show how to get rid of the notch. Apple was the first to put the notch, it went bezel-less. A lot of people hated the notch, but a lot of companies also copied it in one form or another. Efforts to get rid of the notch involved a pop-up selfie camera and a punch-hole display.
Xiaomi and Oppo were the first manufacturers to show that you could go bezel-less and remove the notch by placing the front camera, also known as a selfie camera, below the screen. He takes the images from the front through the screen.
Prototypes were created, but Xiaomi Vice President Lu Weibing said in January this year that there was still too many technological challenges. The high pixel density of current phone screens blocked too much light from the camera lens and sensor when the camera was placed below. Weibing said production on these phones would not be happening anytime soon.

The ZTE Corporation announced this week that it will launch the Axon 20 5G in China on September 1. With other manufacturers trying to figure out how to get there, ZTE will be the first to release a smartphone with a front camera below the display.
In the ad, ZTE discussed the creation of the world’s first pressure-sensitive display, the world’s first naked-eye 3D smartphone, and the world’s first foldable dual-screen smartphone.
It will feature “a compact and uniquely curved display utilizing advanced Oncell-Metal Mesh and COP trim technologies.” Chinese regulator TENAA said the Axon 20 5G will have a 32MP front camera and a four-way rear camera arrangement with 64MP, 8MP and a pair of 2MP modules. Rumors have it that the phone also includes a 6.92-inch HD OLED display and up to 12GB of RAM.
The ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G will be released in China, the Nordic countries and the Middle East on September 1 and will be “the world’s first 5G smartphone with an under-screen camera”.
After ZTE’s announcement, OLED maker Visionox announced that it would begin mass production of displays with sub-display cameras. The company has succeeded in increasing light transmission by using different organic and non-organic film materials. It is not known whether the Visionox screen will be used on the ZTE phone.
