WWDC 2020: the big changes on iOS and macOS

For fans of Apple products, June is always a great month. That’s when Apple hosts the World Developer Conference. As developers start to create and update their products early to work with Apple, consumers can see all of the exciting products Apple is working behind the scenes. WWDC 2020 was one for books, however, giving users many of the things they had been begging for.

Of course, as with most things in 2020, WWDC was different due to the health crisis plaguing the world. Instead of packing the developers and pressing into a place, it was a virtual event. There was also only one physical item mentioned, as shipping dates are still pending. But it is clear that even if the engineers from Apple settled on the spot, they decided to start fulfilling their wishes.

iOS 14

Let’s face it: the idea of the application switch in iOS was getting very old. Finally, Apple gave us multitasking to get excited. Most of us have tons of apps on our iPhones. Organizing them in folders makes them too small to see the contents of the folder. But now iOS 14 will automatically organize them in an application library that will categorize them and allow you to search in an alphabetical list.

Widgets are just as exciting! Of course, iOS has always had widgets, but they will now be much more involved in your phone experience than something you can only access by swiping. You can now integrate them into your home screen and choose their size and appearance.

Other notable changes: picture-in-picture allows you to resize a video and continue watching it on another application. Apple Maps has added bike routes. The digital car key will only be available in the BMW 5 Series for the moment. The application clips allow you to use certain functions of an application without downloading everything.

When phone calls arrive, instead of clearing the entire screen, they will now give you little notifications to answer or swipe. Messages has also been revamped, making it easier to pin conversations and converse more easily in group conversations. Siri has been improved and is now more immediate and will not require you to lose context of what you are working on.

iPadOS 14

Of course, iPadOS 14 will benefit from the same changes as iOS 14, such as widgets, Siri and iPhone response notification.

The application library was not mentioned in the WWDC 2020 opening speech. Instead, it will use universal search which will allow you to search for anything you want. This includes a website, application, information, etc. It will work on the home screen or inside apps. There will also be sidebars and drop-down menus in the apps that will allow you to move more easily through the apps.

If you are an Apple Pencil user, you can rejoice, as there will now be handwriting recognition in a feature called Scribble. You will not have to put the pencil down as often to start typing. You can keep it in your hand and jot down URLs, notes, drawings, etc., and iPadOS 14 will convert it to text.

watchOS 7

As with iOS and iPadOS, watchOS 7 also gets some long-awaited items from users. The first in this list is a sleep app. Users had to rely on third-party apps, but they can now rely on their Apple Watch or iPhone. Your watch will automatically change to Do Not Disturb and prevent the screen from waking you up while you sleep. It will also track your sleep and allow you to create a schedule for your routine.

Other changes: the fitness also receives some changes. There are new workouts, with cycling reappearing, as well as dancing, functional strength training, and post-workout cooldown. In addition, there is a handwashing function that will trigger when your watch detects that you are washing your hands. It will ensure you wash for the recommended 20 seconds.

macOS Big Sur

As with iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, the organization of applications is also present in macOS Big Sur. It will include full-height sidebars and updated toolbars to make sure you can always easily see what you’re working on. Just like iOS for years, Macs will now have a control center that will allow you to access Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, dark mode, music controls, etc.

Notifications and widgets will be combined in one view so you can quickly access the information you are looking for. Just like iOS, Messages will allow you to pin conversations and have an improved experience when messaging within a group.

But the big fun change for macOS will be a redesigned Safari. There haven’t been many changes in a while. You can now customize your start page, like almost all other browsers, and you can now find extensions more easily on the App Store. Hovering over the tabs will allow you to preview them.

The only piece of hardware announced at WWDC 2020 Keynote, Apple is removing Intel processors and will use custom ARM chips, “Apple Silicon”. He expects to have new Macs with the new chips released by the end of the year, and the switch to Apple Silicon will be completely changed in two years. However, the company promises to continue to support older computers with Intel processors.

tvOS 14

The Apple TV operating system doesn’t get huge updates, but like iOS, it will have a picture-in-picture. The biggest change, however, is that the support for your Apple TV as a home hub will be improved. With the picture-in-picture, you can see real-time alerts from your security camera that works via Apple HomeKit.

Speaking of Apple HomeKit, it has been improved. Apple has worked with Google, Amazon, and other technology companies on a universal standard for the smart home. It will now be much easier to add devices via the Home app.

Perhaps the biggest change requested in so long has not even been mentioned. People with sharp eyes saw it in a slide on iPadOS 14. Apple will now allow users to modify default browsers and messaging applications. Clicking on a link will no longer force you to Safari or the Mail application. It is enormous!

The beta developers for all of this software were opened on Monday. Public beta will be available in July. watchOS will be in public beta for the first time this year. Official releases will be available later this year. Learn how to get public beta versions of macOS and follow similar instructions for other operating systems.
