Telegram and Signal strive to protect user privacy and security. Their approach is different. Let’s understand the difference between Telegram and Signal based on how they treat user data and protect their privacy.
Security and confidentiality
The special thing about Telegram is security. He claims that all of his activities, including discussions, groups and media shared among participants, are encrypted. This means that they will not be visible without being deciphered first.
Telegram provides end-to-end encryption using its own proprietary messaging protocol called MTProto. It is not fully open-source and lacks control from outside cryptographers.
Unlike Signal, Telegram holds the encryption keys with itself. This means that, if the government asks or presses it on an appropriate basis, the company could consider distributing encryption keys to users.
The app lets you set self-destruct timers on messages and media you share, which can range from two seconds to a week thanks to its built-in ‘Secret Chat’ feature. It also offers end-to-end encryption, leaving no traces on Telegram’s servers.
Signal uses Open Whisper System to encrypt all E2E conversations by default (end-to-end). It is an open source encryption algorithm. Encryption keys are stored on users’ phones and computers and not on any server, thus eliminating any potential for identity theft.
Signal’s verification method beats all other messaging apps. Users can verify each other’s profiles by verifying security numbers or scanning QR codes containing that unique set of numbers and marking the profile as verified.
When it comes to voice calls, Signal offers an option to “ Always relay calls ” so that all calls go through the Signal server to avoid revealing your IP address to your contact.
The service is designed to minimize data held on Signal users. Signal collects as little metadata as possible and does not store any metadata, logs, or information about its users.
WhatsApp claims to be end-to-end encrypted, but the company is closely monitoring its code. While there is no report that the code has been compromised, this cannot be
Messaging and features
The basic chat experience with text, emoji, GIFs, stickers, and media files remains more or less the same between Signal and Telegram. However, there are a few small observations in our testing.
In general, Telegram felt fluid, responsive, and better equipped than Signal. Telegram also offers interactive stickers, live emojis, and more customization options like theme change, wallpaper, and more.
With Telegram you can create groups with up to 200,000 members and it allows you to share media file up to 1.5 GB in size.
The signal is relatively new to the IM (instant messaging) space. But he’s covered the basics here. The service supports self-destructing messages and offers a Note to Self add-on for collecting thoughts and ideas. In terms of customization, Signal recently added the ability to change theme and wallpaper to their service.
Backup and restore
Telegram beats all other competitors with its superior backup solution. This is one of the reasons why many of us at GuidingTech prefer Telegram over WhatsApp.
Telegram is a truly cloud-based cross-platform solution. You don’t need your phone to use Telegram on the desktop. It is available on all platforms including iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, and Web. Just log in using your cell phone number, and all your messages, media, and files are there, without any transfer process.
Signal on iOS uses the QR code to transfer user data from one device to another. On Android, you can manually move the backup file from your old device to the new one and restore the data. If you lost your old phone, there is no way to restore Signal data to the new device.
WhatsApp uses third party cloud services like Google Drive or iCloud to backup / restore chat data. However, there is no direct way to transfer chat history from Android to iPhone or vice versa.
When it comes to backup and restore, I would put Telegram at the very top, followed by WhatsApp and Signal, respectively.
Telegram is available on all platforms including iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Web, and even Linux. Signal is also accessible on mobile and desktop platforms. But again, we found Telegram apps on Windows and Mac to be better designed than Signal.

Which one is good for you
This is a difficult question to answer. Let me elaborate. No matter how many security features and add-ons a business offers in its instant messaging offering, it all comes down to the number of contacts in your address book that use the service in the first place. Telegram recently passed 500 million milestones, so there’s a good chance your friends and family are already on the platform.
Signal’s security features are top notch, but it’s a new kid around the corner, and you’ll need to put some effort into engaging people with Edward Snowden and Elon Musk’s favorite platform. .
