Which bluetooth speaker is the best

Which bluetooth speaker is the best

When it comes to wireless speakers or bluetooth enabled speakers, JBL is no stranger to audio gaming. The company caters to a range of use cases and offers several budget and premium speakers. One of the new speakers to join this line is the JBL Flip 5. It is a portable speaker with a lot of cool features. Another portable bluetooth speaker that has done the trick is the Anker Soundcore 2. Well, many have wondered if this budget speaker is a good choice over the JBL Flip 5.

Therefore, we compare the two bluetooth speakers and highlight their differences.

We pit the new JBL Flip 5 against the Anker Soundcore 2 and find which wireless bluetooth speaker is better.

1. Design, portability and appearance

The Anker Soundcore 2 sports a simple, straightforward design with a rectangular shape and a black metal grille covering the drivers up front. As this is an IPX7 waterproof speaker, the charging port and the AUX port have a rubber flap for protection.

All the buttons are located at the top of the bar making them easily accessible. A good thing about this speaker is that the rubber coating provides a good grip even when your hands are wet.

On the other hand, the JBL Flip 5 sports a cylindrical look, synonymous with most JBL speakers. You will find the same side passive radiators around the edges.

In addition to being waterproof, the Flip 5 also floats in water. Yes, you read that right. So in case you drop the speaker in the water, it gives you plenty of time to save it.

The buttons provide tactile feedback and are located at the top of the device. They are responsive and emit a tactile response when pressed. Oddly enough, the full length spine of the speaker gives it a unique and premium look, something the Soundcore 2 lacks.

Note that the Flip 5 does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack or speakerphone function. So yes, if you get a phone call in the middle of your music sessions, you won’t be able to attend. Yes, it’s all wireless here.

As you might expect, it’s quite the opposite when it comes to the Anker speaker. You will find the AUX port on the body. Unfortunately, JBL has removed the mic from this model. Bummer, I know.

The two Bluetooth speakers are compact enough to easily carry it or slip it into your purse.

2. Battery life

When it comes to wireless and portable electronics, your main concern is battery life. After all, you wouldn’t want to lug around something that doesn’t offer reliable runtime.

So when it comes to battery life, the Soundcore 2 wins hands down. It brings 24 hour reading time to the table. In fact, it’s one of the best Bluetooth speakers with long battery life in the affordable segment.

It should be noted that the battery life will dip when playing songs at full volume. This is the problem with any wireless speaker.

Unlike that, Flip 5 doesn’t offer any fancy battery life. Its battery life is around 12 hours, which is half that of the Soundcore 2. But if you’re used to regularly charging your electronic devices, that shouldn’t be a big deal.

Thankfully, Flip 5 has a neat battery indicator at the top and lets you know how much juice is left.

3. Sound quality and performance

Let’s make one thing clear. The Soundcore 2 costs almost half that of the Flip 5, and it would be safe to think of the former as a budget speaker. Well, it would be wrong to expect a small, low budget speaker to produce high end sound.

On this point now, the Anker Soundcore 2 offers balanced audio output and sounds much better than your phone speaker. However, the lack of bass and volume seems to work against this. The folks at Techradar believe that low bass becomes important if you play hip-hop music. In a nutshell, it is best to only use it indoors.

Interestingly, the Flip 5’s 20W speaker packs a punch. It sounds crisp, clear and is accompanied by deep, resonant bass. At the same time, Flip 5 results in distortion-free bass even at high volumes.

Interestingly, Flip 5 also bundles a new technology called PartyBoost, allowing you to pair your speaker with other compatible speakers to amplify sound.

Turn up the volume

So which one should you buy? Well, if you’re on a tight budget and a small indoor speaker will do the trick, the Anker Soundcore 2 will do just fine. It’s priced at just under $ 50, and for the price you get support for Apple’s Google Assistant and Siri.

On the other hand, the Flip 5’s compact form factor and the fact that it is quite loud allows you to use it as both an outdoor and indoor speaker. This means that you will be able to take it out for hikes and other outdoor adventures. And the light nature adds to that.

For just under $ 100, you get a next-gen product, and if you plan on increasing your speaker count, you can chain them together to increase the volume.
