Which Android skin is right for you

Which Android skin is right for you

Realme and Redmi / Xiaomi are engaged in one of the hottest battles that will easily last for the next few years. If you look at their mid-range and premium offerings, you will find that the two companies offer almost identical hardware, with one major difference being the software experience. Redmi / Xiaomi uses MIUI on Android, while Realme has switched to Realme UI for its smartphone offerings.

While Xiaomi is there to change all the options and user interfaces possible in the Android stock. Realme has taken an intermediate route to balance stock and skinned Android.

In this article, we will compare Realme UI to MIUI. The comparison will be based on the user interface, customization options, features, theme engine, etc. Let’s start.

Note: For the comparison below, I used Redmi Note 8 Pro running MIUI based on Android 10 and Realme X, which recently received Realme UI 1.0 based on Android 10.

User interface

Here’s where you’ll see the biggest difference between the two user interfaces. Realme is slowly evolving to the original Android look. The notification panel, notification toggles, the settings menu and the application drawer make little or no change compared to Android vanilla. It is a welcome improvement over the old days of Color OS.

Realme settings

MIUI has completely changed the look of the user interface here. It looks like the iOS design elements of the user interface. IPhone convertibles might like it, but Android fans won’t like the added items. My biggest complaint with MIUI is the notification panel. It doesn’t go well with the default Android design, and it’s not as functional as others.

Theming Engine

MIUI and Realme UI go hand in hand here. First of all, the Android skin supports the Android 10 dark theme. The overall implementation is better than the Google version. The MIUI user interface and Realme force some third-party applications to adopt the dark theme.

Miui 4 theme

Regarding the theme, Realme UI and MIUI offer a dedicated theme store to change every detail of the user interface. With just one install button, you can change the application icons, wallpapers and the overall user interface of the home screen. You can also change the default fonts of the device with the theme store.

I like the Realme live wallpapers section. They are minimal, well implemented and fun to use.

Customization options

There are many options to customize in MIUI and Realme UI. Let’s start with Realme UI. Long press on the home screen and go to settings. Here you can use home screen mode, layout, start the application and close animations, gestures and even activate the double-click to lock the option. As for the display, you can also change the color temperature.

Realme custom

MIUI added animation changes here. The user can modify the transition effects, the layout of the home screen, lock the layout of the home screen and even modify the launcher from the settings.

Gestures and Multitasking menu

I prefer taking Xiaomi here. Both companies have added Android 10 navigation gestures. As for MIUI, there are three options. You can go back to classic Android buttons, use Android 10 gestures, and change back / multitasking gestures.

Multitasking Miui

I like the MIUI multitasking menu. It’s a vertical, map-based scrolling menu that lets you see and interact with four apps at once. Blackberry 10 OS once offered such a multitasking menu.

Realme UI has added Android 10 gestures with the ability to revert to standard Android buttons for navigation. The multitasking menu is the same as that of Google by default. It shows only one large application map at a time and requires too much horizontal swipe to pass through the open tabs.

Smart Assistant vs MIUI Home

Realme added the Smart Assistant function in the side drawer. These are mainly advertisements from applications and games in the Realme store. There are two useful additions. Quick functions and favorite contacts. Quick functions allow you to access useful tools such as scanner, translator, Google search or any application from a simple swipe of the home screen.

Realme smart

The MIUI feed menu includes smart action shortcuts such as clearing the cache, calling a taxi, checking PNR, installing apps with one click, etc. The list of widgets includes Cricket score, calendar events, Twitter feed, stock data, etc.

You can also use the upper search bar to search for contacts, applications, and web information. I want both companies to move to the Google feed menu in future updates.

Additional features

The additional features are one of the main reasons why the majority prefer the third-party Android skin to Google’s Android. MIUI has a neat second space feature, which allows you to create a separate profile on the device with apps and files added.

You can also use the clone apps feature which creates a duplicate app on the phone. With his help, you can use multiple accounts on Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp. Other functions include a built-in screen recorder, a dark mode, a rich screen capture tool, a playback mode and a screen recorder.

Miui features

Taking Realme on the App Clone function is as good as MIUI. It’s not only limited to social apps, but you can also clone apps like Amazon, Google Pay, Skype and Swiggy (food delivery app).

Realme has added the sidebar function, which allows you to pin the most used shortcuts such as screenshot, recording screen and applications. You can also change its position and transparency.

I like the Smart Driving function. When activated, it activates NPD while driving, blocks in-app voice and video calls, and automatically sends a message after rejecting a call.

Whose Android Takes Better

The MIUI user interface and Realme give many reasons to choose one over the other. MIUI has better gestures, a multitasking menu, while Realme UI takes it out of the park with smart driving, sidebar functions and a better overview of the user interface.
