What you need to know about Disney +

When it comes to a centralized location for all things Disney, there is no better place than Disney +. The service was first launched in November 2019 and has been a resounding success. Thanks to popular shows like “The Mandalorian” and “Wandavision”, Disney + has already seen its subscriber numbers jump well north of 90 million. If you haven’t jumped on the Disney + bandwagon yet, let’s take a look at everything you need to know before adding it to your list of favorite streaming services.

Pricing

As of the end of February 2021, Disney + currently costs $ 6.99 per month but is is expected to increase to $ 7.99 per month March 26, 2021. For this monthly cost, you have access to the entire Disney catalog of movies, shows, documentaries and more. This allows a family to stream up to four devices at a time or download shows to watch later. In addition, the monthly price also allows GroupWatch, so you can watch up to six friends at a time and react together while streaming.

The biggest caveat is with same-day theater releases – like Mulan, Raya, and the Last Dragon – which are available for an additional $ 29.99. This one-time purchase allows you to watch the film as many times as you want before its theatrical release.

The most cost effective method for Disney + is to pay a full year at a time. If you lock in before the higher price hits the end of March, it’s only $ 69.99 for the full year. This is a saving of just over $ 1 per month compared to the monthly fee. The price will increase to $ 79.99 per year effective March 26, 2021.

Where things get a little more interesting is with the “Disney Bundle,” which includes premium access to ESPN + and ad-supported Hulu. While no annual tier is offered, for $ 12.99 per month, it’s a great way to access all three services. The price will drop to $ 13.99 at the end of March with the same level of access. For anyone who wants the ad-free Hulu experience, it costs just $ 17.99 per month, with an increase to $ 18.99 at the end of March. None of the bundle subscriptions offer an annual purchase price, so it’s a monthly fee, whether it’s limited ads or no ads.

Platform availability

Disney + has already established a strong support presence for the various platforms. Web browsers – which include Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari – are supported. At the moment, Linux is not currently supported nor mobile browsers. Reading on smartphones or tablets will require the available Disney + app, which can be downloaded for both Android and ios. All Android TVs as well as LG’s selection of webOS smart TVs and Samsung’s Tizen operating systems are also supported.

For Smart TVs, Amazon FireTV, Roku, Vizio SmartCast, Apple AirPlay, Apple TV, Chromebook, Chromecast and more are supported. Finally, the applications are available on the Sony PlayStation and Xbox game consoles. No matter what platform you’re on, you’ll have the full breadth of Disney + content.

Content

With currently over 7,500 TV episodes across 500 films, Disney is working hard to ensure that it will be the exclusive broadcast house for all films released by Walt Disney Studios from 2019 and beyond. The only notable caveat is that some of Disney’s old movie selections are missing due to existing licensing agreements with other streaming services. These films will be added to the Disney Plus library once these contracts expire. This includes Marvel fan favorites like Luke Cage, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher, who are all in the process of finishing their Netflix contracts.

Fan favorites like The Mandalorian and Wandavision are the two biggest hits right now thanks to Disney ownership of both the Lucasfilm and Marvel empires. This means that almost the entire Marvel movie universe is available, including Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, and everything in between. The Star Wars catalog contains each of the nine films in the trilogy, its many cartoons and a variety of documentaries around the films. Notably missing are the two cult classic Ewok films which do not have a current arrival date on the platform.

Almost all of the Disney cartoons will also be available. This includes Aladdin (cartoon and movie), The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and many more. A final bonus is that Disney + also brings the full Simpsons lineup.

Video quality

Disney + currently offers some content in Dolby Vision, which is Dolby’s dynamic version of HDR. This means that you need to get the absolute best contrast from your TV screen, even though it will vary depending on the quality of the TV. Additionally, some content includes Dolby Atmos for a more immersive audio experience. When it comes to 4K, Disney + is one of the most generous, as any content played in 4K does not require any additional cost. There is no doubt that in this regard, Disney is very generous with its already low price and high video quality.

Final thoughts

In the end, there is little doubt that Disney + has already far exceeded its audiences’ expectations. That said, if your interests go beyond Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney, classic Star Wars content, this probably isn’t the service for you. That’s not to say he can’t live side-by-side with Netflix or Amazon. With these services, you get a huge selection of drama and comedy-style shows that you probably won’t see on Disney +. Ultimately, Disney + ‘s low price tag combined with its wildly popular library of content make it an easy grab for families and individuals.
