Trump flip-flops on question of receiving a novel coronavirus test

In Mar-a-Lago last week, President Trump took a photo. In it, he stands next to the press secretary to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who was then tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Two senators who were also at Mar-a-Lago quarantine themselves. Miami mayor Francis Suarez, who also interacted with the aid, tested positive for the virus.

Trump, however, said at a press conference today that he did not have to quarantine. “I take pictures and it literally lasts a few seconds. I don’t know the gentleman we’re talking about. I don’t know who he is, “he said. Trump then stated that he does not need to be tested and that doctors should not jump in to recommend tests unless they are absolutely necessary.

When CBS News reporter Weijia Jiang insisted that refusing a test was selfish, Trump backed down. “I did not say that I was not going to be tested,” he said. “Not for that reason, but because I think I will do it anyway.” He said they were working on a schedule, without specifying who he meant by “they”.

Trump is 73 years old. If he were infected with the virus, he would risk having a serious case of COVID-19.
