The top 7 fixes for a default app was a reset notification error in Windows 10

Windows 10 comes with many apps preinstalled. While apps like MS Paint is probably good, others leave much to be desired. For example, the Photos app. This is when you install a third party application and set it as default. Some users receive the “ An app has been reset to default ” notification on their Windows 10 computer.

The notification appears when you open a file and instead of opening in the application you have chosen, it opens in the default application of the Windows operating system. The operating system then informs you that the application’s default settings have been changed. So now all the photos you open will be launched in Microsoft Photos instead of another photo application. Let’s take a look at the different fixes that will fix the error, then you can use the app of your choice.

1. Change settings

You can start by changing the app’s default settings and see if the error persists. Perhaps, it is just a one-time event where for some reason or bug, Windows could not open your favorite application and therefore returned to its roots.

Open the Start menu and find and open the default apps. You can also press the Windows key + I to open the settings, then search inside.

You should see a list of apps here like Mail, Video player, etc. for each file type. Click on the one causing you problems to launch a pop-up window.

Select the app you want to use.

If you continue to see the error, the problem may be related to a particular file type. Scroll down a bit to find the Choose default apps by file type option.

You should see a list of all file types here.

Scroll down to the one you are trying to open in the correct application and select your preferred application here.

2. False positive

Some users have reported that even if they received the error message “a default application has been reset”, the file opened in the correct application. This means that it is a bug that causes the notification error to appear. You can choose to ignore or manage it use Focus Assist.

3. Several options

To continue with the Photos app example, how many photo apps have you installed? Installing too many applications can confuse the operating system, which causes it to turn to the default application provided by Microsoft. Try uninstalling all third-party applications except the one you want to use and try again. Check if the error “ a default application has been reset ” reappears.

4. Windows and update applications

Press Windows key + I to open the settings and click Update & Security.

You can check for available updates here or check and install them immediately.

If this is a known issue, Microsoft may have released some fix. Now is a good time to update the default version and your chosen application to the latest version. Then check if it works. Remember to restart your computer after the update, even if the operating system never asks for it.

5. Delete system applications

If the Windows 10 operating system reverts to the default app instead of using the one you want, to get rid of (uninstall). There is nothing to return if the application does not exist. This should solve the problem once and for all. The lack of options can sometimes be good.

6. For IT professionals

If you are an IT professional working in a corporate environment, Microsoft has writes a detailed guide for you. The guide is not intended for regular Windows 10 users and is a bit complicated to follow. Contact support or your administrator if you experience any difficulties during the process.

7. Restoration to the previous point in time

Restoring your computer to a previous point in time will not delete your files and data, but will cancel all other major changes, including errors and bugs. The steps are fairly easy, but I suggest making a backup, just in case.

Also note that you will lose the recently installed Windows updates, but you can still reinstall them. The system apps you uninstalled will come back, but they weren’t a problem at the time, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Again, you now know how to uninstall them.

Reset and restart

Some of Microsoft’s applications are excellent, such as MS Paint has reached legendary status among the fans. Others, like Internet Explorer and Photos, are arguably controversial about performing the simplest tasks. This is why there is a large library of third-party applications in the Microsoft Store. No wonder the VLC Media player has priority over the native Movies app for the vast majority of users.

We hope that the error “ a default application has been reset ” is resolved on your Windows 10 computer. If you have found another fix to resolve the problem, please share it with us in the comments below. This may help some of our other users in the long run.
