Microsoft Edge features that may be worth trying

Do you only have Microsoft Edge because it’s part of Windows 10? If so, you are not alone. In fact, at the time of writing, Edge still has a lower market share Internet Explorer 6.44%. However, the new features in Microsoft Edge may make you want to give the browser a second look, even if you weren’t originally impressed. Some features are already in the latest version, while others are coming soon.

Violation warnings

Are you still the last to know that your data has been involved in a breach? While you can visit the Have I Been Pwned website, violation warnings are one of the most impressive Microsoft Edge features. When you save the credentials in the browser, Edge will notify you if anything you have entered is part of a known violation.

Obviously, you will need to register your credentials for this to work. However, if you do it anyway, this is an added benefit for autocomplete and password management.

Edge Family Collections

Edge collections are incredibly useful for grouping sites. For example, you can group research sites if you are working on different projects. Click on the Collections icon at the top right of an Edge window and click on “Start a new collection”.

If you already have collections, you can add them by selecting them. Add any web page you want while you browse. Although similar to bookmarks, it is easier to use and seems more organized.

Another advantage is that you can also add notes to your collections. You can add basic formatting and even lists.

Search in the sidebar

This is one of the upcoming Microsoft Edge features. At the time of writing, it is just starting to be deployed to testers. However, it is a promising feature that makes research easier. All you need to do is highlight a term or phrase on a web page, right-click it, and ask Edge to search for more information.

Instead of opening a new tab, a sidebar appears on the right side of your screen showing you the relevant results.

Tracking protection

Hate trackers? Who doesn’t? Microsoft Edge has already added built-in tracking protection. Open the Edge menu and choose Settings. Open “Confidentiality and services”.

The first section is Tracking Prevention. By default, it is set to Balanced. It blocks new trackers, known harmful trackers and reduces the personalization of advertisements. You can also choose Basic, which allows almost everything except known harmful trackers. The other option is Strict, which blocks most trackers.

You can also add exceptions and see which trackers have been blocked. While it can use a little more personalization, it’s a good start to make Edge a little more privacy oriented.

Vertical tabs

The vertical tabs are yet another feature to come. However, if you often work with many tabs, you know exactly how easy it is to accidentally close one. Soon you will be able to switch to the vertical tabs. These appear on the side of your screen, and you can even hide them with a single click to help you focus more easily.

Immersive reader

Do you hate to see clutter while trying to read something online? Immersive Reader is already integrated with Microsoft Edge. Although additional functionality will be added soon, you can already experience it in the latest version. When viewing a web page, click the Immersive Player icon in the address bar. It’s the book with a speaker icon.

A new version of the page loads with options to enhance your experience, such as reading the page aloud, changing the font, grammar highlights, and line focus. When you’re done, click the immersive player icon again to return to the original page.

Smart copy

Copy and paste works quite well, but you may lose formatting when you go from a web page to a document. The next smart copy is one of the smartest Microsoft Edge features. You can right-click on a page, activate smart copy and keep the formatting of what you copy, even if you copy tables.

Although there is no definitive date on upcoming features, they are currently being tested at the time of writing. This means that they should be available in the coming months. You can check for the new version at any time using Windows Update or from Edge itself. Open the menu and choose “Help and Comments -> About Microsoft Edge”.
