How to turn sound on and off in the Zoom app on the phone

Video conference applications such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Hangouts, etc. are more important than ever. You can participate in your meetings from anywhere in the world. If you want to mute your sound from the start, Zoom has an option for that. Tap the Join option in the Zoom app to join a meeting. Then activate the toggle next to Do not connect to audio. This will mute your audio from the start.

1. Mute all participants during a Zoom call

To do this, follow these steps on Android and iPhone:

Step 1: Launch the Zoom application and create a meeting.

2nd step: Tap the Participants tab at the bottom. You will be redirected to the list of participants.

Stage 3: Tap on Mute at the bottom. This will mute everyone. In case you want to reactivate everyone, press Reactivate All. Confirm on the next screen.

Note: If you do not want participants to reactivate, uncheck the “Allow participants to reactivate” option. It is only after this that you can turn on the participants’ audio, and they cannot do it themselves.

If you want to deactivate or reactivate only certain people, tap the participant’s name. Then choose Mute or Unmute from the menu.

Note: In case the participant has muted and you reactivate him, he will receive a notification telling him that the host wishes to reactivate him. It is only when they give their authorization that they will be muted.

Otherwise, if you want to mute attendees from the start of the meeting, tap the three-dot icon at the bottom of the meeting screen and access the meeting settings.

2. Turn off the speaker during a Zoom call

If you participate in a meeting, you have no right to mute the sound of others. However, you can turn off your speaker in the Zoom app to reduce incoming audio during a call. To hear the sound, you will need to bring your phone to your ear.

To use this feature, tap the speaker icon in the upper left corner of a Zoom meeting. To deactivate it, press it again.

If you can’t hear others, or if others can’t hear you, follow these troubleshooting tips to resolve the problem.

Restart the phone

To start, restart your phone, then join the Zoom meeting again.

Activate the loudspeaker

If you can’t hear anyone, make sure the speaker is on, as shown above. You also need to increase the volume on your phone.


Sometimes we accidentally mute. So tap the screen and tap the Turn on sound button. If you cannot turn the sound back on, the host may have muted the sound. Send them a message to wake you up.

Allow Zoom to access your video

To do this, tap the Join Audio option at the bottom of the meeting screen. Then let Zoom access your audio. On the iPhone, you can receive a notification asking you to give access to the device audio when you join the meeting.

Grant permission to the microphone

To do this on Android, go to Settings on your phone> Applications. Tap Zoom and then Permissions. Grant the Microphone permission.
