Are you going to use your new phone? If you purchased a new iPhone or Android phone and already use the Google Authenticator app for 2-factor authentication (2FA), you will need to transfer the accounts to your new phone. Otherwise, you may be locked up without 2FA codes.
What is 2FA?
If you do not know what 2FA is, it is another layer of security for online accounts to protect it, even someone else knows your account password through hacking or a phishing scam. On most well-known sites you can create 2FA, so it is better to be safe and activate it in your account.

Transfer Google Authenticator Accounts
- Install the Google Authenticator application
Install the Google Authenticator app on your new phone from the App Store or Play Store.
- Open the 2FA webpage on your computer
Open the browser on your computer, then go to the Google 2-step verification webpage. Click the Start button in the upper right corner of the screen and log in to your account.
- Log in to your Google Account
Enter the password for your account on the next page and click Next.
- Change phone
On the Authenticator Settings page, click on the “PHONE CHANGE” available under the Authenticator app sections
- Choose the type of phone
Select the phone type you have on your iPhone or Android, click Next.
- Scan QR code
Open the Google Authenticator app on your new phone.
Tap the ‘+’ button and scan the code displayed on the computer screen. Click Next on the computer screen.
- Enter the code
You will see that a new account on your phone with your 2FA code has been added to your Authenticator app. Enter the 6-digit code from the app to the webpage and click Verify.
Once the new phone has been added and verified, the code of the old phone is no longer valid. You can have more than one account in the Google Authenticator app, you need to transfer all the accounts manually.
Remember, do not uninstall the Google Authenticator app from your old phone until you have completed the transfer of all accounts.
