How to Erase and Format a Storage Device on Mac

For some reason you have to delete / format and format a storage device. MacOS has a Disk Utility app that lets you easily delete, format, and recover tasks.

Time required: 10 minutes.

In this guide you will learn how to delete a storage device and then format it again so that you can use it again.

  1. Make a backup of your data

    Everything will be deleted from the storage device if you follow the steps below. So, if you have important data on your storage device that you are going to delete, be sure to transfer it to another device.


  2. Launch the Disk Utility

    You need to run the Disk Utility app on your Mac and it depends on what type of disk or volume you want to erase.

    Delete the essay disk? To delete a startup disk, start MacOS in Recovery and then open Disk Utility from the recovery window.

    Are you deleting a different type of storage disk? Go to the macOS application folder and then to the Utilities tool, here you will see Disk Utility. You can search for Disk Utility in MacOS Search.

  3. View all disk and volumes

    When you open the disk utility, click View and then select View All Devices.

  4. Delete disk

    Now you can see all the disk in the sidebar. Select the disk / volume you want to delete and click the Erase button.

  5. Select partition scheme

    Select GUID Partition Map from the Schema menu.

  6. Choose file system format

    Choose the format of the file system from the Format menu.

  7. Give a name

    Enter a name for the disc.

  8. Secure delete option (optional)

    Click on the Security Options and then choose how many times you want to write about the data while deleting it.

    You can only perform safe wiping on the disk if this button is available for your storage device in the disk utility. You cannot be safe on a certain type of storage device in the disk utility.

  9. Delete and format

    Finally, just click on the Delete and then on Done to complete the process.
