Facebook grabbed its competitor Instagram several years ago, and it is perhaps the smartest move the social network has ever made. Now instead of working independently, they will work together, which will dominate the business. The company announced this week that Facebook and Instagram will now work side by side and share features like chatting.
Updates from Facebook, Instagram and Messenger
After an update, Instagram will start announcing to users that it is adding a chat feature which will include emoji, change chat color, etc. But chat and other features won’t be limited to Instagram, because users will also be able to chat with other Facebook users, also.
This change will have the effect of limiting the reasons why Facebook and Instagram users have to quit to use other apps. Users will be able to chat on multiple platforms whether they have both apps or not.
However, they won’t have to choose to use the apps together. An expanded set of privacy tools is offered. Users can specify who can reach them in the chat, who is sent to the Message Request folder, and who cannot reach them at all. Instagram users who choose not to chat with users on Facebook can turn off the feature.
There will be a new account center in the service, an addition that started rolling out this week on Facebook. It allows users to turn off a number of different features.
Users of Instagram and Facebook Messenger apps will be able to block and report unwanted messages on phone calls as needed, but now full conversations can be flagged and not just single messages. The accounts of minors will be the first to benefit from the “Safety Notice” function in Messenger.
The platforms themselves do not merge. You won’t see your Instagram chats in Messenger or vice versa. Instagram messages and calls will remain in the Instagram app, but messages from Facebook users will also appear there.

These changes were tested with a small group of users over the summer. In addition to the chat function, Facebook and Instagram users will be able to watch videos together, and soon Reels too.
In addition, there will be an option to make the messages disappear with a “Disappear Mode” option. Selfie stickers will also be offered to change the colors of a cat, and personalized emoji reactions and animated effects will also be offered.
These changes are already being rolled out. There are also plans in the future to include WhatsApp in cross-platform sharing and chatting, leaving even more reasons for users not to leave the collection of apps owned by Facebook.
