SpaceX, Elon Musk’s company, started launching the satellites in 2019 and they have since become the brightest objects in the sky.

SpaceX plans to launch hundreds, if not thousands, into our low orbit throughout this year.

While the satellites will get weaker once they reach their final orbit, the devices will still be visible in areas unpolluted by light, explained Under Lucky Stars.

A study by the European Southern Observatory on the impact of satellite constellations – like Starlink – found that most telescope networks could alleviate the problem – but some would still be affected.

Large field investigations – particularly those carried out with large telescopes such as the Vera C Rubin observatory of the National Science Foundation of the United States – would be the most affected.

The study found that up to half of the exposures at the Rubin Observatory would be “severely affected,” depending on the time of year and night.

“Mitigation techniques that could be applied to ESO telescopes would not work for this observatory although other strategies are being actively explored.”

The broadband satellite coverage system is expected to be operational in the northern United States and Canada later this year and will expand to global coverage by 2021.
