If you’ve been busy doing your homework and trying to meet deadlines, chances are you’ve seen essay writing services advertised online. These claim to take whatever topic you want and write a full essay on them, which you can submit to top marks. However, are these services legitimate and legal, and is it a good idea to use them?
Are Essay Writing Services Legit?
Most of the time, an essay writing service will do what they say. A company will hire academic writers, in-house or freelance, and assign them assignments. Editors type the full essay and then give it to you. The service allows you to legally claim the essay as your own so that you can simply put your name on it.
Often the service places a strong emphasis on a non-plagiarism position. This is because academic institutions often analyze submitted material to see if it was taken from a website or a book. The essay writers will make it themselves so the client doesn’t get caught cheating.
Are Essay Writing Services Legal?
The whole process is called “ghostwriting”. It’s when a writer writes a piece and then allows someone else to claim full ownership. Ghostwriting is really a legal work avenue; some celebrity biographies have been written by other authors.
As such, someone else writing an essay and releasing their property is also legal. Some have tried to ban this practice, such as universities in UK.
Should You Use Essay Writing Services?
They are legal and legitimate, so why not use them? While you might be tempted, there are downsides to using a service.
The potential problem of plagiarism
For one thing, academic institutes will usually ask you to tick a box or accept a statement that what you are submitting is your own work. This goes beyond ghostwriting, as the statement will ask you to confirm that you were the original author of the play.
This means that if the institute finds that you have used an essay writing service, that is considered plagiarism. It is plagiarism in the fact that you claim that a play that you did not write belongs to you. It doesn’t matter if the original author gave you ownership of it – you didn’t write it down, period.
While your institute may not find cut-and-paste plagiarism in your work, it can raise eyebrows if your essays suddenly have a different “voice” or cover something that was not part of the original course.
When pre-written essays do damage
Even if you don’t get caught, handing in a pre-written essay is more than helpful. Sure, you hit a deadline without doing any work, but the essays are meant to further your own education. By having someone else do it, you are stepping back from your classmates who have tried and learned the subject.
Even if you use a pre-written essay, you might not like what you get. The Guardian did a study about people who have written, used, or read an essay written by a service. People who used it felt guilty or ended up getting bad grades; tutors who had submitted pre-written articles to them could sense them.
As such, it is not a good idea to use an essay writing service. You don’t learn anything from it, you run the risk of being flagged and kicked out of your course, and – even if all goes well – that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get a good grade for it.
Not the easy way out for testing
While there are many online courses that you can take for free, it is not recommended that you hire an essay writing service to complete your work. They are bad for your education, they may not give you a good grade, and if you are caught doing it you will be in big trouble. Buckle up and finish this test!
