Apple Buying Guide: When to Buy Apple Products

With Apple’s WWDC 2020 in the rearview mirror, anticipation may begin to rebuild for the rest of the year and new Apple hardware. As is usually the case, Apple is rolling out its latest software updates this summer and releasing new hardware in the fall. Along with this, there are many questions about when is the best time to buy Apple products. In this Apple buying guide, we’ll take a look at what you can buy today and what you should remember.

MacBook Air / Pro

What you should do: Buy now

Deciding whether or not to buy a MacBook Air / Pro now is getting harder and harder. The recent 2020 updates have improved Apple’s entire laptop lineup, including basic 256GB storage. Eliminating the hated butterfly keyboard has also made it worth considering. 2020 Apple Laptops.

That said, Apple’s decision to switch from Intel chips to “Apple Silicon” is incredibly appealing. Yes, many questions remain about the performance of Apple Silicon. If it runs something like the iPhone and iPad processors made by Apple, it could perform exceptionally well.

Better battery life and overall performance might be just two of the many reasons Apple Silicon might be worth the wait. However, if you can’t wait for a new computer, or if you still want to run Windows on a Mac, then you need to pick something from Apple’s current lineup. The MacBook Air and the 13 “and 16” MacBook Pros are truly exceptional machines in their own right. The $ 999 price tag on the MacBook Air is particularly appealing, and while Apple Silicon looks great, the current Pro and Air models perform exceptionally well.

What you should do: wait

There is no doubt that you shouldn’t hesitate to buy a new iMac just yet. The current model of iMac is overdue for a redesign. There’s no answer as to when Apple will release a new iMac or whether it’ll wait for Apple Silicon, but if you can wait, you should.

If you want to buy an iMac in the next six months, wait.

What you should do: wait

When someone asks if it’s time to buy an iPhone, the answer depends on what time of the calendar year the question is asked. If history repeats itself, Apple will launch a new iPhone (more like multiple iPhones) within the next sixty days (as of this writing).

As is usually the case, they will have faster processors, improved cameras, and increased battery life, among other new features. It is also likely that the new iPhones will be priced similar, if not identical, to the current models. The best thing you can do now is wait. On top of everything else, the next “iPhone 12” will likely be Apple’s first iPhone with 5G connectivity.

Existing iPhone models like the iPhone 11 series will drop in price soon after the new iPhone is released. Now, if you were to ask this question in January, the answer might be completely different. This fall season, wait, wait, wait.

The iPad Pro, in particular, which got a refresh in March 2020, is a particularly tough decision. If you follow the world of Apple news closely, you know there are always rumors about upcoming updates and the iPad Pro is no different.

That said, the inclusion of the A12Z Bionic chip, Pro display, Pro cameras, and LiDAR scanner make it an incredibly attractive device. Add the Magic Keyboard and the iPad Pro has never been so close to a computer. Will Apple release another update to its already existing update in the same year? It’s unlikely, so go ahead and grab one.

The seventh-generation iPad at $ 329 is a solid buy right now. Yes, it comes with a slightly underpowered A10 processor, but it’s great for families, kids, and just for general entertainment.

For the iPad Air and the iPad Mini 5, both refreshed in early 2019, it’s a bit more difficult to answer. It is very possible that these two items could be updated before the end of the year, so waiting until September / October seems perfectly reasonable.

What you should do: Buy now

The company’s announcements at WWDC show that with iOS 14, AirPods will get even smarter. Things like charge optimization and, in the case of AirPods Pro, a surround sound effect, are coming out in the fall. At this time, there is no reason to suspend all AirPod purchases.

The “regular” AirPods and AirPods Pro are unlikely to be refreshed this year. Even then, any change is likely to be incremental at best, so nothing that would make you buy early.

Apple Watch

What you should do: wait

Again, we’re stuck looking at an Apple product that’s incredibly easy to recommend but hard to say yes at right now.

The Apple Watch Series 5 is a fantastic smartwatch and easily the best in its class. There’s a good chance Apple will announce a new watch along with a new iPhone later this year. The good news is that the release of an all-new Apple Watch would bring the Series 5 price drop, which could be another reason to wait. Every Apple Watch in the 3 series will receive WatchOS 7, which includes sleep tracking.

Deciding when to buy a new Apple product has always been a juggling act. It’s always been about how long you can wait for a product refresh. While Apple seems to be on an internalized schedule for their updates, they can just as easily turn things around. Remember, if you are a student you can get discounts on Apple products, so if you really need something now, don’t wait. Buy with confidence that any Apple product you buy will have years of hardware and software support.
