AMC Theaters, the largest theater chain in the United States, will close nationwide for six to 12 weeks.
This decision is in accordance with local, state and federal guidelines to control the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. In the past few days, several states and cities have declared that places like cinemas, bars, and restaurants must close. The federal government has also recommended that public gatherings should not exceed 10 people, making it impossible for cinemas to operate.
“We are always so disappointed for our movie buffs and our staff teams that the new CDC guidelines that Americans should not group in groups of more than 10 people make it impossible to open our theaters,” said the CEO Adam Aron. said in a press release. “We will continue to monitor this situation very closely and hope that we can once again delight moviegoers across the country by reopening AMC cinemas in accordance with guidelines from the CDC and local health authorities.”
AMC is not the only chain to close its operations for several weeks while the company is struggling with the pandemic. Another popular theater chain in the United States, Regal, is also closing. Independent theaters like Alamo Drafthouse and Nitehawk Cinemas in New York have also decided to close. Before the closings, the box office has had its worst weekend in the past 20 years, reaching an all-time low, recording a total of $ 55.3 million between March 13 and March 15. Even before AMC and Regal made the public choice, people weren’t going to the movies. Movies like Forward, Disney Pixar’s most recent joint, would typically gross more than $ 100 million nationally over a few weeks. The film made only $ 60 million domestically and an additional $ 40 million internationally.
It’s a scary time for the entertainment industry, which has caused the delay of several films, including Mulan, New Mutants, F9, No Time to Die, and Peter Rabbit 2. Unprecedented movements like Universal and Warner Bros. breaking the theatrical window to offer films like Birds of prey, The hunt, and Emma to people at home via VOD rental options on iTunes and Amazon, also took place.
