Before continuing, verify that your device is not disabled. You should also examine the speakers or the tips of the AirPods to see if any dirt or particles are obstructing the audio output.

Note: The solution in this guide applies to all generations or editions of Apple AirPods – AirPods 1, AirPods 2, and AirPods Pro.

1. Check the battery percentage

The next thing you should check is the battery status of the AirPods. For iPhone and iPad, place both AirPods in the charging case, close the covers, and reopen them. You should see a map showing the battery status (in percentage) of the AirPods and the charging case.

You can also go to the widgets section and check the Batteries widget for the charge status of your AirPods. Note that at least one AirPod must be in the charging case at the case battery level.

Note: There is no way to natively check the battery life of AirPods on Android and Windows devices.

If the AirPods battery level is 10% or less, leave them in the charging case to charge them and try again.

2. Reactivate Bluetooth / Disconnect AirPods

As you already know, AirPods connect to mobile devices and PCs via Bluetooth. If they aren’t working properly, turn off the connection by turning off Bluetooth on your device and remove the AirPods from your ears (you don’t have to put them back in the case). Turn on your phone’s Bluetooth again and reinsert the AirPods into your ears. If you are using an iPhone / iPad or Mac, the two devices will automatically reconnect.

For Windows and Android PCs, you may need to reconnect to AirPods in your device’s Settings menu.

3. Disconnect other devices

You also want to make sure that your device isn’t connected to wired headphones or other wireless audio devices. In case of multiple (or simultaneous) connections, make sure AirPods is the active / primary audio output device. Enter the Bluetooth settings menu on your phone / PC and disconnect any unrecognized device causing the interruption.

4. Adjust the audio balance

Also, make sure the Disable box is not checked. Disabling your AirPods will not produce any sound even if it is connected to your PC.

5. Disable automatic ear detection

Audio output is automatically routed to AirPods when placed in your ears on iPhone and iPad. It’s a cool feature, but it sometimes messes up the sound production of AirPods. Some iPhone users who have experienced these sound issues have solved it by turning off Auto Ear Detection.

6. Reset AirPods

If the AirPods still not producing sound after implementing all of the above solutions, you need to reset them. This means removing AirPods from your device’s connected devices list and pairing them again from scratch. Go to your device’s Bluetooth menu and forget about AirPods. Then put the AirPods into pairing mode (see the next paragraph) and reconnect them to your device.

Put both AirPods back into the charging case and hold the setup button on the case for 10 seconds until the status light flashes solid white. Now go to your device’s bluetooth settings menu and add the AirPods as a new device.

Last resort

If the AirPods still won’t play audio, you might want to restart your device or reset its network settings. Refer to our guide to reset network settings on Android and iOS. Windows 10 users can follow our guide to reset Windows network and everything you need to know about it. If the problem persists, contact the Apple Support Center; you could have a bad or damaged AirPods for all we know.
