There are several reasons why this can happen. Let’s take a look at them, as well as what you can do to get your AirPods to connect to your iPhone again. The following fixes also apply to the iPad.

1. Check compatibility

If this is your first time trying to connect a pair of AirPods to iPhone, you should rule out any compatibility issues. Depending on the AirPods model, your iPhone must be running the following versions of iOS to be compatible:

AirPods Pro – iOS 13.2 or later

AirPods (2nd generation) – iOS 12.2 or later

AirPods (1st generation) – iOS 10 or later

To check which version of iOS is running on your iPhone, open the Settings app, tap General, then tap About.

If you’re using an older version of iOS that doesn’t meet the compatibility threshold, go back to the previous screen on your iPhone and tap Software Update to install the latest updates.

2. Check Bluetooth

Your iPhone may have Bluetooth turned off. To check this, open Control Center by swiping your finger from the top right corner of the screen.

Note: On an iPhone with Touch ID, swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen.

If the Bluetooth icon seems inactive, press to activate it. Your AirPods should then connect automatically. If that doesn’t happen (or if Bluetooth was already on), long press the Bluetooth icon twice, then tap your AirPods to manually connect to them.

6. Disable automatic switching

Starting with iOS 14, your AirPods automatically switch between iOS and iPadOS devices as soon as you start using them. The functionality is relatively new, however. If you are experiencing connectivity drops, it could very well be caused by your AirPods switching to another of your devices at random.

If you want to prevent this from happening, you should turn off automatic switching on each of your iOS or iPadOS devices.

Step 1: Go to Settings> Bluetooth on the device your AirPods are currently connected to. Next, tap on the “i” symbol next to your AirPods.
