15 best fixes for Google Drive not syncing on Mac

Cloud storage services have improved dramatically in terms of reliability over the past decade. But they are still not perfect. And Google Drive is no exception, with synchronization issues more or less the norm on all platforms. Although your day is perfect, the lack of synchronization with Google Drive can put your offline files at risk.

15 best fixes for Google Drive not syncing on Mac

Some time ago, we resolved the various synchronization problems of Google Drive on Windows. And this time, we’re focusing on Google Drive on macOS.

If you’re having trouble with the backup and sync client on your Mac when syncing files and folders to or from Google Drive, here are the best fixes that can help fix it.

1. Break / Resume

You can fix most of the Google Drive sync issues by simply interrupting and resuming the backup and sync client.

Click the Backup and Sync icon in the menu bar, then click the Plus icon (three dots). In the context menu that appears, click Pause.

Wait a moment, redo what you just did, but click Resume this time. All downloads and downloads blocked on Google Drive should probably resume.

2. Restart the backup and synchronization

At times, you have to go beyond pausing and resuming Google Drive to exit and reopen the backup and sync client.

Click the Backup and Sync icon in the menu bar, then click the Plus icon (three dots). In the context menu that appears, click Exit backup and synchronization.

Then open the dashboard and click on Backup and sync from Google to relaunch Google Drive.

3. Disable / Enable Wi-Fi

Disconnecting and reconnecting to Wi-Fi can also help resolve sync issues in Google Drive.

Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar, then click Turn off Wi-Fi. Wait a few seconds, click the Wi-Fi icon again, and then click Turn on Wi-Fi.

Connect to your preferred Wi-Fi hotspot if your Mac doesn’t do it automatically. Also try to switch between available Wi-Fi connections in cases where synchronization issues persist.

4. Restart Mac

If the above fixes don’t work, try restarting your Mac. Sounds like a simple thing to do, but a reboot can potentially fix the most common glitches, including blocked uploads and downloads on Google Drive.

Open the Apple menu, then click Restart to restart your Mac.

5. Contact the owner

Shared Google Drive files and folders may have restrictions that may prevent you from synchronizing changes made to them.

If this is the case, your only recourse is to contact the owner of the shared file or folder for the required permissions.

6. Check the synchronization settings

If a certain folder doesn’t sync from the cloud to your Mac or vice versa, you may have omitted to specify Google Drive to sync it first.

To verify, click the Backup and Sync icon in the menu bar, click More, and then click Preferences.

You can then use the options on the My “Mac Model Name” tab to select the folders on your Mac that should sync with Google Drive.

In addition, the Google Drive tab allows you to select the folders you want to sync from Google Drive to your Mac.

Note: If you don’t want to micromanage every time a new folder is added to Google Drive, select the Synchronize everything in my drive option. However, this can be costly in terms of local storage.

7. Allow access to files

Is Google Drive unable to synchronize one or more folders despite their selection in the backup and synchronization preferences? In this case, you need to confirm whether the Backup and Sync client has sufficient permissions to access the folders on your Mac.

Start by accessing the Security and confidentiality pane in System Preferences (Apple menu> System Preferences).

If you need to make a change, quit and restart the backup and synchronization client.

8. Full disk access

You can also go beyond what you’ve just done and grant Google Drive permissions to all local storage on your Mac.

Visit Security and Privacy in System Preferences, then select Full Disk Access. Then add Google Backup & Sync to the list of apps and check the box next to it.

Exit and then restart the Google Drive Backup and Sync client.

9. Reset configuration

An incorrect Google Drive configuration may prevent the backup and synchronization client from synchronizing files and folders.

To resolve, try to delete the existing configuration. Once you’ve done that, Google Drive prompts you to configure your preferences from scratch. This will not delete any existing Google Drive files stored locally.

Open Terminal (Finder> Utilities> Terminal) and run the following command:

mv ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Drive/ ~/.Trash/

Most likely, Google Drive should resume syncing without problems from now on.

10. Disconnect and reconnect the account

Disconnecting and reconnecting your Google Account to the Google Drive Backup and Sync client can also help resolve persistent synchronization issues. Don’t worry – all of the previously synced files will stay on your Mac.

Click the Backup and Sync icon, click More, and then click Preferences. Switch to the Settings tab, then click Disconnect Account.

Set your preferences, then choose to merge with all existing Google Drive files when prompted.

11. Force synchronize files

If Google Drive finds repeated problems syncing certain files, it may prompt you to try again.

Click the Save and synchronize icon, then click Show non-synchronizable files (if available). Click Retry All to attempt to force sync them.

12. Locate the missing folder

If you’ve renamed or moved the main Google Drive folder on your Mac (or any other folder you’ve set up to sync with Google Drive), the backup and sync client won’t sync.

If this happens, click the Backup and Sync icon, then click the Locate option in the error message.

Simply specify the renamed or manually moved folder and click Open to start synchronization again.

13. Check storage

Your Google Account provides 15 GB of free storage space. Google Drive will not sync if you have already filled this quota. The same applies every time you reach the storage limit for a paid plan.

To verify, open the Backup and Sync Preferences panel, then click Settings. You can then see the current storage status.

If you run out of space, you need to buy more storage space to continue syncing with Google Drive. You can also use this handy guide to free up Google Drive storage.

14. Bypassing the proxy

Google Drive does not work well when connected via a proxy. In this case, try to bypass the proxy settings.

Open the Backup and Synchronization Preferences panel, click Settings, and then click Network Settings.

Exit and restart the backup and synchronization client to start bypassing the proxy settings.

15. Reinstall backup and synchronization

If you’re still having issues with Google Drive, try reinstalling the backup and sync client. The locally synced Google Drive files will remain on your Mac and you can merge them after the reinstallation process.

Start by quitting Backup and Sync. Then download the latest Google Backup and Sync installer for Mac.

Install the app, then click Replace to replace the current backup and sync installation from Google.

Then log in with your Google account and set your preferences. Choose to merge with all existing Google Drive files when prompted.

The reinstallation should probably resolve any synchronization issue caused by a broken instance of the backup and synchronization client.

Bottom Line

Thankfully, the above fixes worked and Google Drive is back to sync your files without a problem. Take note of some of the easiest fixes – such as pausing and resuming – so you know what to do the next time you’re having trouble with Google Drive.
