Netflix is like a dense and mysterious jungle with lots of great movies, TV shows, and documentaries tucked away in various categories. Most people often have a hard time finding a new movie or show to watch while moving from one category to another. One of the many categories is suspense or mystery, which amazes those looking for thrills with twists and turns. What better way to while away the time locked inside the house than to watch a good murder / missing person thriller on Netflix?
While there are many amazing movies available in different languages, it was difficult for us to list every movie that our teammates loved. I’ve curated a list of some of the best popular thriller movies on Netflix.
Let’s start.
1. Gone Girl
Based on the book of the same name by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl is a murder and missing person mystery that shakes the lives of a seemingly happy couple. The narrative will continually change and you are never quite sure about the main characters or their intention. It’s not just the couple. It seems that everyone has their secrets hidden under the layers of the social fabric that we call society.

Gone Girl will force you to rethink the couple and married life where you can be both victim and aggressor. Maybe that’s why Amy (the missing girl) says, “We’re so cute I want to hit us in the face. That sums up his vision for their marriage.
2. Fractured
The film begins with an ordinary day. A couple travel when their daughter’s arm is fractured. They go to a hospital for treatment when his wife and daughter go missing while he is taking a nap. No one remembers anything and there is no hospital record either.

Fractured does a good job of keeping your mind occupied with thoughts of what happens next. The hospital is a nice setup, which most people will identify with. I mean, it’s a place that no one wants to visit if given a choice and you don’t always know who to believe.
3. The invisible guest
The story is about a perfect night gone awry. A happy and loving couple book a hotel room. The man wakes up the next morning to find that his lover is now dead. The next thing is obvious as to who is blamed for the murder.

What follows is a cat and mouse game where the man hires a lawyer to prevent him from ending up in jail. Or did he really commit the crime? You will love to unravel this mystery.
4. Sleepy Hollow
This one is a classic where you’ll see Johny Depp at his best, well at least for me. Set in 1799, at the dawn of a new century, Depp is sent to investigate a series of murders where the Headless Horseman beheads the victims. Is this fiction or is there a sane and logical explanation behind the Headless Hunter sightings? Only one way to find out.

The setup is weird but beautiful, with lots of fog, sounds, and shadows to complete the effect. Note that this is a bloody film with several scenes of beheading, blood and close-ups that are not suitable for children at all. You, on the other hand, are going to enjoy it.
5. Forgotten
A guy is kidnapped and mysteriously returns after 19 days. The problem? He’s a different man with no recollection of what happened during those 19 days. His brother doesn’t know what to do with this new person who looks like his brother.

Forgotten is the kind of movie that starts after the second half. You’ll have to wait for the director to build a solid foundation before you overthrow everything you’ve seen and understood.
6. Zodiac
Based on real events that rocked the city of California from 1960 to 1970, Zodiac is a crime thriller. With a stellar star cast including Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr., Zodiac follows criminal proceedings mixed with media trials.

The killer is constantly leaving clues and writing letters, but there is no Sherlock Holmes in this world to wrap up quickly. The investigation goes on for a long time, years in fact, until the very end of the film. The zodiac can seem slow at times, but this is how crimes are solved in real life.
7. Lucid dreaming
Lucid Dream will take you to a rabbit hole of crazy dreams where after a certain point it will become difficult to tell the difference between reality and dreams. A father spends three years looking for his kidnapped child, but to no avail. And so he starts looking for her in his dreams to retrace his steps.

If you can’t get enough of Inception, you are going to love this movie because it takes a different take on the dream technique. But, equally mind-blowing with a complex ending.
8. Murder Mystery
What happens when you invite Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston to solve a murder mystery? Murder Mystery is a thriller. A billionaire is murdered on his yacht, and the New York cop played by Sandler on vacation is everywhere.

It’s a holiday comedy that’s a light-hearted, wacky, and eerily satisfying take on murder mystery films. There are also plenty of suspects, some of them portrayed by known faces like Gemma Arterton and David Walliams. It’s a movie that you can watch with your family and even invite the kids over.
9. Secret obsession
A woman wakes up with amnesia with no memory of her past. Her husband takes care of her. But there is something wrong. She doesn’t love him back, suspecting he isn’t her husband. Who is he then and what happened? How did she get in this state?

Secret Obsession has little to offer in terms of action but focuses more on the plot and all the twists that go with it. Prepare to feel your privacy invaded as you follow Jennifer’s story.
10. The interview
Do you like grueling and thrilling interrogations? The interview has little action to offer, but the scenes are shot in a dimly lit room. What starts off as a stolen car and missing person investigation slowly turns into a serial killer hunt.

It is an Australian film that should have received a larger audience but never did. Fans of The Usual Suspects will love this movie. But, there are more twists and turns as investigators aren’t Saints either and quickly find out that even they are under investigation. A must have for those who enjoy watching gritty, thriller movies on Netflix.
11. Mirage
Mirage is a thriller thriller that follows the story of a young mother. She saves a man’s life in the midst of the storm, and instead of being rewarded with good karma, a chain of negative events ensues.

The consequences unfold one after another as the story continues to lead to unexpected twists and turns. Watch for the end because it will surprise you even more. A real thriller. One of the best in Spain.
Netflix’s mysterious subcategories
There are so many great movies on Netflix and I barely scratched the surface. These are a good place to start and will keep you busy for a few days / weeks depending on your work schedule. You’ll find out more as you complete them. Netflix’s recommendation engine is pretty good. Otherwise, you can always search for more using the link we shared in the opening paragraph above. Have a good weekends.
