10 Google Classroom Tips and Tricks for Students

Has your teacher recently sent you an invitation to join a class on Google Classroom? You may have never heard of Google Classroom before. Now that most people are stuck at home, teachers are using this Google offer to create virtual classes and share homework. Meanwhile, students can submit their work there directly, post their homework notes, check class comments, and even engage in healthy discussion with other students or teachers using Google Classroom.

In this article, we will mention the top ten Google Classroom tips and tricks for students. We recommend that you integrate them into your routine and complete task submissions efficiently.

1. Customize your Google Drive folder

When dealing with 5 to 6 classes at a time in Google Classroom, it is always advisable to personalize them in Google Drive so as not to end up mixing up the homework. As you may know, your teacher would organize all of the necessary documents and resources in a specific Google Drive folder.

You can go to a course> Classwork> Google Drive and open the folder in the new tab. Right click on it and rename or change the folder color. It’s one of the smart ways to organize your files and separate your school work from personal projects.

2. Add a class comment on an assignment

Google Classroom allows you to comment on an assignment in the class. You may not want to engage in general discussion, but you want to discuss the assigned task only.

So you can go to Class> Class work> select an assignment> Display the assignment and add a comment. This comment will be visible to the whole class.

3. Use Google Apps to submit your work

As mentioned earlier, Google Classroom also integrates other Google apps and services. You can use YouTube Video, the Google Docs file, the Google Sheets file, or even the Google Drawing file to submit your assignments.

Open the class> Classroom> Open an assignment and press add or create in your work menu. It will open a sliding menu with the ability to add a file from various sources – Google Drive, direct link, attach a file and you can even create new documents.

This is useful in certain situations. Suppose you accidentally submitted a wrong file for an assignment. This can happen because you could be dealing with dozens of files through classes and personal work. Click on the submitted assignment and the Cancel Shipment button will appear to cancel the submission. You know what to do next.

5. View your work

As a student, you may want to regularly check your work and deadlines. Sometimes it can be confusing to keep track of submissions. And you could end up missing the deadline for the project.

You can open a class> Work in class> View your work and here you can see all the work assigned with the title, due date, attached file, etc. You can also use the side filter menu to streamline the list.

6. Use private comments

If you have any doubts or specific questions, you may not want to engage in the general discussion, as it would be visible to everyone in the class. Google Classroom offers a private comment function to speak directly to teachers. This discussion remains private and is not visible to the rest of the class.

Open a class, go to Classwork> see assignment, and you’ll see the Private Comments section on the right side. Use it to discuss things about the project with teachers in private. If you use class comments in an assignment (check tip # 2 above), it will be visible to the whole class.

7. Customize class notifications

Processing multiple classes at once can confuse you with all incoming notifications. Fortunately, Google Classroom allows you to customize them.

In the Google Classroom app, tap the hamburger menu and go to Settings. You will see notifications toggle for all comments and courses you are enrolled in. Adjust them according to your needs.

To manage notifications by class, press Class notification and here you can see all of your courses registered. Disable unnecessary.

8. Disable email notifications

In addition to push notification, Google Classroom also sends email notifications regarding the latest class updates. For an occupied classroom, practice can quickly fill up the inbox space in Gmail. Remember to deactivate the option in the settings.

9. See note, private comments submitted by teachers

Right now, we bet you know your teachers can also use the private comment feature in Google Classroom. You can view them and check the notes for the submitted work by going to Classwork> View your work. Use the filter menu and select the “Returned with grade” option and you will be able to see the teacher’s grades and private comments for submission.

10. Unsubscribe the class

Are you finished with class? Is the semester or the project finished? A student can unsubscribe from a class in Google Classroom. From the home page, tap the three-dot menu and select Unsubscribe Class.
